Lament.

Well? Lets hope the snow stays away for a few weeks! At least it gives me time to get the feed in, and for the horses to thaw out!
The ice to the farm has gone, and the roads are now clear. I havent been riding yet, as the ground has gone from rock hard to mush! They, the horses, need new shoes, and there fitness is nil. So a few more days wont harm them.

I have started setting up this years ride, across the Cheviots, there seems to be interest from others. Several riders from the Welsh country, are keen to ride it, so shoul be fun. Bobby looks good to go this year, and we are all looking forward to it.

I`ve really lost the will to live this winter, what with one cold or another. I seem to be the receptacle for all the current illnesses, that are doing the rounds this time!
Still, it could be worse, they could do me harm!

  1. "The Ride" is The Cheviot Challenge Ride. It started as a trip, between Bobby and I. I heard that there was a series of rides across, and in the Cheviot hills to be ridden as day rides. But as we, didnt have the time to do all the five rides over five days, we decided to do it over two days!

So it entails 40 miles on horseback on the first day, followed by a rest day, then we travel back via another route, 30 miles. The route covers virtually no roads, only hill tracks, and moors, forest tracks. There is around 2000 meters of ascent and descent.

    So its a wild ride!

  2. Thanks, Cheyenne. Sounds good. I think you must have been a pony express rider, in an earlier life. I'm not sure who Bobby is, but I'm pretty sure Bobby isn't a horse, as I thought at first.

  6. A few light flurries, but nothing since the last lot some weeks ago.

i cant see us getting any more now.How is it with you? Thought you`d shuffled off this mortal coil!

  7. Can't see us getting any more? I'm looking out of window at the stuff right now. I'm fine, thanks. I've shuffled off nowhere - though I could say the same for you, you've had a quiet month, too. Truth is I've been laid low with various wintry germs, resulting in a lot of coughing and spluttering, and a whole lot of lethargy. I've just about shaken it off now. Anyway, glad to hear you're not suffering from snow around the Cairngorns. Just out of interest... do you ever watch Rab C, Cheyenne? I love that show and its marvellous characters. Jamesie Cotter has me in stitches sometimes.

  8. Sorry to hear of your ills! Glad to hear you`re getting better. By the way, I`m not as far north as the Cairngorms, in fact not even as far north as Glasgow! Yes I do watch Rab! But I prefer the older ones, the new series isnt as good, it lacks bite! Cotter, keeps it going, but Rab himself, although good, he has gotten older, as we do! But again, the show lacks bite.

  9. Hello Cheyenne. I’m fine, thanks. My use of Cairngorns (incorrectly spelt, sorry) was a euphemism that alluded to you being snow free eighteen inches north of the knees, rather than your geographical location. In plain English/Scottish, I’m glad you weren’t snowed in up to the bollocks. Glad you’re familiar with Rab C, bite or no bite. Wonderful characters, all the same.

  11. Much as I'm gladdened to hear it, it's a picture I don't care to imagine. Moving on swiftly... did you get to care for those quarter horses?

  12. No, things took a turn for the worse, the snow came, frost and some pretty horrendous circumstances. All of which serves to remind me, that some decisions are best thought out well!

Turns out that, although it sounded a good idea at the time, after carefull consideration, the cost per horse, including my own! Would have been too much, and after the winter we`ve had? Well I`m sorry it never happened, but glad it didnt! I think that makes sense?,

  13. Yeah, I think I got there in the end. Shame though. Maybe you'll have your own quarter horse someday.
